As the sun began to break, the gleaming rays of light tempered with shades of violet dreams and amber passion, painted the gloriously pallid canvas of an early winter morn. Enlivening the senses; the air was saturated with undeniable electricity that unified all things and foretold of what lie ahead. I, about to engage the day, paused in brief: there was no time, no place; only perfect nothingness. The feel of the brusque, current surging through my veins alluded to the feeling of everything finding its place in the Great Order of this life. Taking a final breath, I prepared my mind as a blank piece of paper for the day to write upon, and entered into my destiny….
This, like so many other things that I have penned, is from direct experience. In this particular instance, I was recalling what it felt like before a wrestling tournament. The air truly was electric, and the outcome of the day was undisclosed. Having been a coach for so long, I learned to look at what I was doing in a different way. I always imagined myself the general of an ancient army that was headed off for battle. The lives and wellbeing, as well as the morale of my soldiers were all important. So how does this apply to our health and fitness?
I’ve been a trainer for a very long time. I have to say that after having worked at more than one top tier fitness club, I have noticed a great many things about people and their workouts. Some come to the fitness area with a sense of uncertainty or anxiety about what they are going to do. Others seem to hold the opinion that it is necessary, but not necessarily fun. So how can we take a different approach that is good for our mental as well as physical health?
There are several ways, but first, the best thing to do is be open-minded. Don’t be so concerned with the outcome rather keep your mind in the moment. Attack your workouts with intensity and fervor. Be open to the possibilities and changes that can occur before, during and after each workout. Look at it each time, as a chance to change and grow and learn something more about yourself and how it relates to the world around you. Play games with your own mind. I’m not saying that you have to think about it the same way that I do, but maybe you can find a relevant mind-set, that will enhance what you are doing. Take the time to feel what’s going on around you. There is a lot of positive energy out there, and it’s easier to project “good vibes” if you are open to feeling them. Try these things and let me know what you think. You might be on the verge of something new and wonderful!
